At present, the mainstream of drum brake is internally tensioned. Its brake pad (brake shoe) is located inside the brake wheel. When braking, the brake pad opens outward and rubs the inside of the brake wheel to achieve the purpose of braking. In the past three decades, drum brakes have gradually given way to disc brakes in the car industry.


However, due to the low cost, it is still used in some economic cars, mainly for the rear wheel and parking brake with small braking load. The drum brake is used on the car brake drum. Generally, there is only one wheel cylinder. When the wheel cylinder receives the hydraulic force from the master cylinder during braking, the pistons at both ends of the wheel cylinder will simultaneously push against the left and right brake shoe ends, with equal force.


However, because the wheels are rotating, the pressure exerted by the brake drum on the brake shoes is asymmetric, resulting in self increasing or self reducing force. Therefore, the brake shoe on the side of self increasing force is called the leading shoe in the industry, and the brake shoe on the side of self reducing force is called the slave shoe. The friction torque of the leading shoe is 2~2 of the slave shoe.

In order to maintain good braking efficiency, there should be an optimal clearance between the brake shoe and the brake drum. With the wear of the friction lining, the clearance between the brake shoe and the brake drum increases, and a mechanism for adjusting the clearance is required.


In the past, the clearance of drum brake needs to be adjusted manually with feeler gauge. Now, the car drum brake adopts the automatic adjustment mode, and the clearance between the friction lining and the brake drum will be automatically adjusted after wear. When the clearance increases, and the brake shoe pushing amount exceeds a certain range, the clearance adjusting mechanism will pull the adjusting rod (pawl) to the position where it engages with the next tooth of the adjusting tooth, thus increasing the length of the connecting rod, making the brake shoe position shift, and restoring the normal clearance.


Car drum brake is generally used for rear wheel (disc brake for front wheel). In addition to its low cost, the drum brake also has the advantage of being easy to combine with the parking (parking) brake. For cars with drum brakes on the rear wheels, the parking brake is also combined with the rear wheel brake.


This is a mechanical system, which is completely separated from the brake hydraulic system on the vehicle: use the hand lever or parking pedal (American cars) to tighten the steel cable, and operate the rod of the drum brake to expand the brake shoe, which plays a parking brake role, so that the car will not slide; Loosen the steel cable, and the return spring will restore the brake shoe to its original position, and the braking force will disappear.
